Personality Squall is a loner in the truest sense of the word. He is highly introverted, and seldom allows himself to trust other people. He comes off as aloof, moody, inflexible, and ill-tempered most of the time, which is his method of protecting himself from being betrayed or abandoned. He may come across as uncouth, but his heart is in the right place. Though Squall has difficulty in social situations, he has a very strong sense of moral responsibility, and (though he would never admit it) takes to leadership positions well (but not without complaint). He believes that if given a task or responsibility, it is his duty to complete the task to the best of his ability. His stubborn nature prevents him from leaving something half-done, which can be good or bad depending on the situation.

History Squall grew up in an orphanage, his mother dying young and never knowing his father. He had a little bit of trouble adjusting to life there, but soon found a close friend in a young girl named Ellone; she was known as ‘Big Sis’ by both Squall and many of the other children. Unfortunately for Squall, Ellone disappeared from the orphanage one day without explanation. Squall was completely crushed, since Ellone was the only real friend he ever had. Because of the strong sense of abandonment he felt, Squall became distant from others and was never able to become close to anyone else.

Not long after Ellone’s disappearance, Squall and the rest of the children from the orphanage were recruited to a military school called Balamb Garden as mercenaries known as SeeD. There, he was trained in fighting with a weapon known as a ‘gun blade’, and quickly became one of the top students. He soon graduated (as well as earning a scar across the bridge of his nose from the final exam), and became a full-fledged SeeD. Not long after, he was hired by Rinoa Heartly of the Forest Owl’s to kidnap President Deling. The mission ended in failure, when Squall became caught up in a fight with The Sorceress Edea. She shot him in the chest with a spear of ice.
